Changes at the top

By Pip Thomas Over the years I have tried to balance the news of what is going on in the Dental School in the form of administrative changes, achievements of and honours won by staff and students together with extra-curricular activities of the undergraduates, which I felt would keep the postgraduates feeling involved with the Changes at the top

Emma Jane Boyes

Emma qualified BScOHS in 2008 and was awarded the Somanda sponsored Prize for “the graduate who has demonstrated the best overall performance over the three years of the BSc course”. During her time in Manchester she proved to be someone to whom her fellow students looked for leadership and guidance and she was also popular Emma Jane Boyes

Welcome to the Sept 2017 recruits

For a few years now, the Dental School has provided a Welcome event for the first year Dental students, the first year BSc Hygienist and Therapy students and the first year Foundation course, for those students who have alternative A level subjects. The Welcome event is on the Friday morning of Fresher’s Week and takes Welcome to the Sept 2017 recruits

66 Club 50th anniversary

The 50th Anniversary of the year of 1966 was held in the Portland Hotel adjacent to Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester City Centre on the weekend of Friday 8th and Saturday 9th of July 2016. True to form it rained solidly for both days so it was as well that the meals on both nights had 66 Club 50th anniversary

2017 Biennial reunion

The evening dinner was held in the Christie library in the Whitworth building. This was indeed a memorable occasion as, after the drinks reception, we proceeded up the same stairway as trodden by all graduates on their way to the Whitworth Hall graduation ceremony. The book lined library was an appropriate dining room for the 2017 Biennial reunion

Intrepid dentists complete Atlantic rowing challenge

More people have climbed Everest and gone into space than have rowed the Atlantic, but that’s just what dentists Justin Marney and Azud Irshad did early this year. They set out on December 14th from La Gomera in the Canary Islands. Fifty one days, 11 hours and 35mins later, on February 3rd, they rowed into Intrepid dentists complete Atlantic rowing challenge

Professor P J Holloway

When Phil Holloway arrived in Manchester in 1963, he already had an impressive international reputation. He had qualified in Guy’s in 1949 and completed his National Service in the RAF after which he held teaching posts in The London Hospital. His subsequent prestigious postgraduate research career included an appointment with the MRC, study leave in Professor P J Holloway

Happy times in Rugby Union

When I started at the Dental Hospital in 1955, National Service was still in being and as a fresher I was unable to gain a place on any of the University Rugby Union teams. Instead I turned to squash and played for Manchester University for five years, being captain in 1958/59 as well as playing Happy times in Rugby Union
