Dr Jessica Zachar from Queensland University Australia (centre above) recently visited Manchester; here’s how she described the experience:
In January 2020, I had the unforgettable opportunity to visit the University of Manchester Dental School as an academic visitor from The University of Queensland.
I explored research collaboration opportunities between the two dental schools and participated in clinical observations within the Oral Surgery Department.
I observed complex oral surgery procedures under sedation and general anaesthesia at the Royal Infirmary as well as undergraduate oral surgery teaching by Dr Neil Patel at the Dental Hospital.
I obtained a greater insight into the NHS system, the training speciality pathways as well as the undergraduate teaching curriculum. Learning the similarities and differences in dental teaching has enabled me to bring back home new innovative ideas for the UQ dental school.
The partnership has also enabled the establishment of a dental student exchange programme. Dental students from Manchester now have the chance to go down under to observe dentistry at the UQ Oral Health Centre, while, dental students from Australia will have the opportunity to visit the UK and the Manchester Dental School.
A big thank you to the University of Manchester for the unforgettable experience and for their hospitality during my visit.
